Are these principles founded on truth or idealology?
This morning I saw a post on social media stating the following;
"Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness are not Biblical principles, they are Epicurean principles."
call it righteous indignation or just plain anger but i could not hold back my feelings after reading this statement, the following are my thoughts and I encourage each of you to think and pray about what you believe in, I feel that such a statement speaks to the very core of who we are as a people, and what our values are as an organization.
Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness
The Declaration of Independence states:
We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
One must realize that the use of the word Creator by our founding fathers was and is their acknowledgement of the one true biblical God.
John chapter 1 verse 1 says this;
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God, and the Word was with God
And verse 3 says this;
All things were made by him, and without him was not anything made that was made
To understand this passage is to realize and accept that the word of God existed before anything else
Epicurean principles were founded around 307 BC by the Greek philosopher Epicurius, knowing that the word of God existed before all other things, is it not logical to deduce that God’s word existed before Epicurus, and that at least a portion of his principles were drawn from Biblical writings?
Deuteronomy chapter 30 verse 19 states;
I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live;
Here we see the word of God, the Bible instructing us to choose Life, therefore life itself is a biblical principal
Liberty is defined as the “the quality or state of being free”
2 Corinthians chapter 3 verse 17 states;
And where the Spirit of the Lord is there is Liberty,
So liberty itself is a biblical principle
Ecclesiastes chapter 2 verse 26 states;
To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness
Again we see the word of God, stating that happiness is a Biblical principle.
Although many have come and gone and will continue to do so that distort, pollute, or claim these principles as some form of their own ideas, the word of God is true, it has and will stand the test of eternity, these principles and all others contained within the Bible existed before man was even created on this earth.
